A criminal record is often the first place companies start. It is easy to lie about on a resume or application, so employers like to double-check. Not only does the conviction itself make some applicants unsuitable for a job, but lying about it will almost guarantee the applicant is not someone worth employing. Whether you have been convicted of a crime or not, background checks will turn up most of the activities you have participated in. It is best not to lie about anything.

If you used to work for a competing business for many years or your family has heavy involvement in the competition, the company may deduce that you are attempting to get a job to steal secrets or sabotage projects. Such things are not unheard of.

In a few rare cases, background checks have turned up some extremely strange results. Upon further investigation, the hiring managers were able to see that someone was stealing the identity of an applicant. This is extremely helpful. It is reassuring to know that if you get hired somewhere, chances are, your identity is not being stolen.
